Wine and Its Health Benefits

Wines have etched its significance at the gatherings of success. Whether it be tying the Nuptial Knot, Birthdays, Job Promotion or the next big move, raising a toast to the occasion with a glass of wine is the mark of accomplishment. A tradition that has been consistent through the ages. The discovery of wine is quite debatable dating back 6,000 years ago in either Israel/Palestine, parts of the middle East or what is now called Georgia. Wine was first produced out of a mishap when native yeasts stuck to grapes stored in containers turned the sugars in the grapes into alcohol. Ancient Egyptians refined the sciences of both grape growing and winemaking and included wine in burial crypts for consumption in the afterlife. Though myth owes wine production to the Greeks, they spread winemaking throughout the Mediterranean, and the Romans turned it into a big business. The Spanish exploration of the New World brought winemaking to the Americas, while other Europeans took it to Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

In our modern world, the wine culture thrives on and has gained more popularity not only because of its classy heritage but also for its health benefits which have been upheld by research conducted on the subject. However, due to the presence of alcohol, wines must be consumed in moderation or not at all. Below are benefits of a healthy wine culture.

Heart Health

Wine (especially Red) in moderation, has long been thought of as heart healthy. The alcohol and certain antioxidants may help prevent Coronary artery disease, the condition that leads to heart attacks. Part of the benefits might be that antioxidants in wine may increase levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) and protect against cholesterol build-up. Resveratrol in wine comes from the skin of grapes used to make wine and because red wine is fermented with grape skins longer than white wine, it contains more resveratrol. Though not as extensively studied as its red counterpart, white wine does have positive heart health attributes too.

Maintain Bone Density

Research on Bone mineral density (BMD) found that phytochemicals such as the polyphenols found in grape skins contribute to healthy bones. Hence the saying, Drink milk to build bones and wine to preserve them. This analogy hints at stages of development in infancy and adulthood

Prevents Cancer
Wine contains flavonoids that have the ability to kill cancer cells. These natural substances are tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol which have beneficial effects such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and thus inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

Promotes Sleep & Reduces Stress
Resveratrol contained in wine isn’t only healthy for the heart but also assists in calming the nerves and has the ability to reduce stress. Wine could also aid in managing anxiety, bad feelings, tiredness, and fatigue.

THE LIVING LEGEND PROFESSOR WOLE SOYINKA AT 85 – WINESTITUTE

On Monday, July 15th, 2019, Nero and Vivian Asibelua of Winestitute hosted living legend Professor Wole Soyinka to a wine auction as part of activities surrounding his 85th birthday.

The Wine Auction event was indeed unique as it is a first of its kind in Nigeria. Proudly hosted by Winestitute, the event which took place in Lagos, was simultaneously to raise funds for the Nobel Laureate’s foundation- ‘Wole Soyinka Foundation’.

The African giant Soyinka during his speech which was received with a roar of applause that filled the auditorium, said:

“Since my birthday came along; I have always been feeling ungracious, that other people celebrate my birthday, more than I do. For me, it’s a pain! Except this one. I’ve been enjoying this one, because of this event”.

Kongi’ as fondly addressed by his contemporary spoke about the idea of celebration, and celebrating by drinking wine and equally creating wealth, and also remain humane to sharing the joyous moments with family and friends.

This only goes to agree with the saying by the famous Louis Pasteur,

“A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.”

Wine Auctioning’ dated back seventeenth century and it’s presently pacing the billion dollar venture. But for the record, Winestitute Nigeria and Wole Soyinka Foundation remain the first to auction premium wines in Nigeria, and what a noble way to do it than in the presence of top players in the country.

200 bottles of wine specially made for this enigmatic event are serially numbered and each has Professor Soyinka’s signature signed on it, plus hanging a poem written by the foremost African Noble Laureate on the neck of each bottle. Truly these particular set of bottles of wine are collectors items.

As the first-hand auction began by the Winestitute auctioneer; several POS transactions went down in minutes and many other anonymous biddings went under the gong with all proceeds going to the Wole Soyinka Foundation.

In attendance was Governor of Ekiti State- Kayode Fayemi, Professor Duro Oni, JP Clark & wife Ebun Clark, Former Minister of Power, Works and Housing- Babatunde Raji Fashola, Former Minister of Transportation- Rotimi Amaechi, CEO Terra Kulture- Bolanle Austen-Peters, Traditional Noblewoman- Erelu Dosumu, Co-Founder Sahara Group- Tonye Cole, and Founder Fight Against Desert Encroachment – Dr. Newton Jibunoh and many more.
